post entry / upload photos Wednesday, April 30, 2008 I dont mind paying to get my ass whooped by the professionals Daryl 1st Ever National Club Series PDF Print E-mail Written by Shiok League Organisers Tuesday, 29 April 2008 10:37 Dear Captains and Team Reps, Shiok has the honour of organising the 1st National Club Series in Singapore. This will be a great chance for clubs from all different levels to play against eachother in preparation for other tournaments, and of course the Singapore Open in August. With this in mind, we would like to propose the following format for the National Club Series. This league will provide 5 weekends of intense ultimate competition and Disc Golf. We feel that all 3 playing surfaces, beach, field and indoor, will provide different challenges to each club and will provide a different feel to the game of ultimate. With that said, if we cannot secure an indoor venue, we will continue on with the proposed schedule without the indoor weekend. Therefore, the indoor venue is To Be Confirmed. Proposed schedule: .... May 24 (Sat) - field (round robin tournament based on how many club teams) May 31 (Sat) - beach (5 vs 5 tournament) June 14 (Sat) - Hat tournament June 21 (Sat) - Disc Golf (Destination: TBC by Lance) June 28 (Sat) - field tournament - Sing open format (4:3 format) Indoor venue - TBC We feel that a 2 week break in between most venues will allow teams to go back to their training and focus on anything that they noticed during the prior tournament. The final weekend, June 28, is a last chance to prepare competitively against other teams before the Singapore Open. League committe may make changes to schedules, formats and other arrangements, if necessary, and inform captains before the affected event. Important: 1. Captains or team reps need to register team before first weekend of competition. 2. No pay, no play (details of paymet method to follow). Payments will be collected by teams, through captains. Individual payments will not be entertained unless for tournaments open to Public. 3. Our Hat tournament and Disc Golf are open to Public and non-club members. Only members of public and non-club players will have to pay $10 per person per event to join. Club members' league fees will cover these 2 events. Registration details will be released nearer to the dates of events. Cost: Each member of the club team will need to pay a league fee of $30. This will cover prizes, necessary rentals (tents, food), the rental of Sentosa beach and, if applicable, an indoor venue. Also, the UPA is introducing a membership fee that will cover events outside of usual leagues; a supplemental group insurance for each UPA member, as well as other costs that UPA has covered until recently. This is $20 per member and is renewable annually. Kindly direct all UPA(s) fee questions to Daniel Chua ( chua1972@gmail.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) our UPA(s) treasurer. Total fee for National Club Series is $50. (This covers league and UPA fee) More information will be released on the UPA(s) website regarding the fee. Captains or team reps are responsible for collecting team fees. Teams are asked to wear their own club jerseys for the tournaments. Teams: Captains of each club will be required to fill out the attached Excel file with the members of their club team. Once you have filled it out, please sent it back the tournament organisers, either Ramlan rum_land@yahoo.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or Adam adam.turner@gess.sgThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Team registration deadline: May 19th. If you have any questions, feel free to contact either Ramlan or Adam. Best regards, Shiok league organisers 30 bucks for e experience! Jack Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Air Bounce When an airbounce is thrown correctly, the disk leaves your hand, approaches the ground at a point a short distance in front of you, and then mysteriously rises. When I throw, I keep this in mind. As near as I can figure one of two things is happening when you make this throw. First, look at it like you are taking a huge trashcan lid and compressing a whole lot of air, between it and the ground, and this compressed air, then expands, and propels your disc back upwards. Second, view your disc as an air plane wing that has it's front edge tipped upwards so that as air passes under its surface, it has the tendency to get lift and rise. When you make your throw: 1. Use your thumb to push the rear of the disc down, leaving the front edge slightly higher and allowing for the airplane wing lift effect. As your arm propels the disc forward, this angle will give it lift. 2. Standing sideways with your Right foot out in front, toward your catcher and maintaining the disc angle with your thumb, start your (right handed) throw, high up near your left shoulder. Now, using your thumb to keep the disc angled up, sweep your hand and arm down (diagonal motion) low toward your right knee and out to an imaginary point about 4 to 7 feet in front of you. (place another disc in front of you as a target if necessary.) This motion needs to be fast, so that you compress the air, instead of just "fanning" it out of the way, the way you would fan yourself on a hot day. By moving downward quickly, you will compress the air you need to get a good "bounce" off it. Hence the term "Air bounce" You have been told to push hard with your thumb. You need to push with your thumb to keep the tail of the disc down as you compress air. I often start with my disc 45 to 65 degrees up from horizontal and often nearing vertical, This allows me to grab a lot of air and then I flatten out to more like 30 degrees as I release. Your friends have been trying to tell you to use that thumb to create pressure and air compression as you try to shrink a square foot column standing air 3 to 4 feet high into a 1' by 1' by 1' layer of air that the Frisbee can ride up on. A good air bounce can be thrown under a park bench and come out the other side rising. I have heard urban legends about greats who can put one under a car and have it float back up to catchable height. Daryl This is not a post. Jun Ting Monday, April 28, 2008 Dao.
